Happy new year ThunderBand members and parents!
The spring semester is exploding with opportunities throughout the school!
Please take some time to review the revised schedule for this spring.
Please do not hesitate to contact me there are any discrepancies, conflicts or questions. The dates listed in bold are most important.
I cannot emphasize enough, the importance of communicating your needs with me. If you are overloaded and cannot commit to a performance, just speak with me in advance. We will work together to find a solution. My job is to offer exciting opportunities that help you grow as an individual and musician.
Jazz Band: The date for the High School Region IV Jazz Fest Concert has changed to Tuesday, February 14th.
(If I had arranged the date, I would not have chosen Valentine’s. But then again, I get to share the evening with all of you!)
Jazz Band: If you have not paid your remaining fees for Sitka, please do so asap! sitkajazzfestival.com
Solo and Ensemble: Those of you who plan to partake in this festival need to have all details (approved music/accompanist) turned into me before then end of January. Regional Solo and Ensemble is February 25th at UAA ARTS.
Let’s have another great year!
Ms. Ninoyu

ABOUT
CODE OF CONDUCT
The East Anchorage High School Band Program carries a great deal of Pride and History. Each member is here by choice and will be treated as an adult. In return he/she is expected to act as an adult at all times and to avoid those situations that would cause one to compromise himself/herself or the school. Inability to follow the school rules and those procedures in this handbook will result is discipline as outlined in the general EAHS code of student conduct. It is advisable for all band members to realize that they are members of one of the most visible organizations in the school and serve as liaisons of EAHS. Any conduct which is not exemplary or which reflects poorly on EAHS will result in reprimand or dismissal from the organization. If this kind of behavior occurs while on an off-campus trip, the student(s) will be sent home at their own expense.
The National Merit Award winning East High School Fine Arts program has maintained a quality program with rich traditions, demanding expectations, but a rewarding experience. The National Endowment for the Arts has selected East’s Fine Arts Department as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, one of only 25 Fine Arts Departments selected for this honor nationwide.
In 1999, East High School’s Music Department was warded the prestigious title of “Grammy Gold Signature School.” The National Recording Arts and Sciences placed East in the top ten secondary music departments out of 15,000 schools competing nationwide. East was again selected as a Grammy Signature School for the year 2000 and for a third year in 2001.
East Anchorage High School is also the designated School of Choice for the Fine Arts for the Anchorage School District. This designation allocates additional funding for an expanded curriculum and extensive artist-in-residence programs.
There are many opportunities for musical growth and performances outside of the classroom during the year: All-State Band, Full Orchestra, Regional and State Solo and Ensemble, and the Fine Arts Showcase are several venues for student participation.
experience.
PURPOSE OF THE BAND PROGRAM
The purpose of the band program at EAHS is to serve as a creative outlet and expand musical independence for all students who wish to receive an education in music, while at the same time serve the music department, the school and it’s community, and the student body through its public performances.
Fundrasing Objectives:
Jazz Band:
The EAHS Jazz Band has been invited to perform at one of the States most prestigious jazz festivals, The Sitka Jazz Festival, February 2-5th, 2012. Here, students will learn, perform and work with world-renown jazz musicians. This is one of the few environments where students can become saturated with our nations music. Each student must raise $600 to cover travel expenses and fees.
General Band Account:
Five performing groups represent the EAHS Band Program: Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Concert Band, Pep Band and the East Taiko Team. Unfortunately, our annual budget only provides us with enough funding to purchase four pieces of music. This reality severely constricts the ability of the ensembles to explore a wide variety of repertoire. Each ensemble also has many practical needs and your donation will further the development of the program.
Here are some needs:
Box of Reeds $20 each
Jazz Band Music $50 - $75 each
Symphonic Band Music $75-$100 each
Private Group Lesson $25 each
Projector
Finale, music composition software school subscription $300/5 computers
CURRENT PROJECTS: CONNECTIONS
One goal of the East Band Program is to challenge stereotypes of a traditional band program. New possibilities arise when we create and maintain connections between community groups and across the fine arts. Some of this year's collaborations include: Band+Drama, Band+UAA, Taiko+Dance, Jazz Band+MLK Celebration, Band + Orchestra and much more!
The Symphonic Band and the 4th period Play Production Class just completed their collaborative elementary tours. Seeing the joyful reactions of the children was such a delight and reminded us of the power of good entertainment. The production included "Peter and the Wolf," a puppet show and a musical medley of Disney theme songs.
During our visit to the King Career Center, Mrs. Kellie Puff (KCC Catering and mother of a Symphonic Band member, Ryan) provided lunch for all of us. Wow! That was the best lasagna my tastebuds have encountered! Thank you Mrs. Puff!
Also, thank you to all involved that made this a successful event!
Collabortions within the East Fine Arts Department will continue! Stay tuned!
What: LBG Citrus Fundraiser (www.LBG.org)
The fruit will be delivered on Wednesday, January 25th.
PAST PROJECTS: $3200 for Japan Relief
After the tsunami and earthquake disaster in Japan occured on March 11, 2011, my students energetically agreed that they would like to partake in relief efforts. So in conjunction with our Spring Concert on April 28th, 2011, we held a Japan Relief Concert which featured musicians, speakers and dancers from the community. Students, teachers and administrators throughout the school contributed to the silent auction, activity booths, demonstrations, food booths and the concert. As a result, we were able to donate $3200.00 to victims of Japan through the Japan Relief Fund of Alaska.
